I would love it if Aohige or CCC could clear up the right translation on the page where Luffy says that Law is his friend. Is he using the regular friend or the "Nakama" approach. It would clear my mind as I´m slightly starting to fantazise about the "what would happen if torao ends joining". I´m not an utter fan of him, but the dude has grown on me
Luffy said Law became my nakama (not future tense, but past tense), to which Law responded NO I DIDN'T!
"Nakama" is closer to "comrade", someone who is "one of us" for a common goal and cause.
Friendship is usually a part of it, but not a necessity. It's a closer relationship than "ally", so comrade is the closest definition.
Also, it's a freaking JOKE panel, Luffy's intention for saying that is hardly important at this point.
It's a standard boke-tsukkomi comedy.
In fact Law is busy with constant tsukkomi these days, thanks to absense of Nami lol
Was ist Tsukkomi Comedy?
There is one particular style of traditional Japanese comedy called manzai (漫才), which is a type of two-man act. One man is called the boke, who is the buffoon; the jokester; the funny guy. The boke will make jokes, many of which (to American audiences at least) are groan comedy. The other member of the pair is called the tsukkomi, and his job is to react to the boke's jokes (often critically), taking on a role very much like "the straight man" in Western comedic practice.
Fazit:
